Give your cards the right protection

Sleeves, toploaders or a binder? A practical starting point for cards you want to keep in good shape.

10 Sept 2026 · 2 min read

You have found a card you want to keep. Start with suitable protection and a regular storage place. A simple routine makes a collection easier to organise and look after.

Start with a sleeve

A soft sleeve provides a first protective layer. Check that its dimensions suit the card and never force a card into a tight sleeve. Ultra PRO uses non-PVC polypropylene for its card sleeves. Check the material and intended use of the particular product you buy.

Work on a clean surface. Have your sleeves and holders ready before handling an unprotected card, so you do not need to leave it on the table while searching for supplies.

When should you use a toploader?

A toploader is a more rigid individual holder. Put the card in a suitable soft sleeve before placing it in the holder. Ultra PRO describes this order in its protection guidance. Check both the card dimensions and thickness that the holder accommodates.

This can be useful for individual favourites. If you want to keep toploaders in a binder, choose a binder designed for them. An ordinary card pocket will not necessarily fit.

A binder you enjoy opening

Choose an arrangement that fits your collection. You might reserve pages for each set and keep a list of missing cards. Do not force extra cards into a pocket, and close the binder without putting pressure on its contents.

Where you store it matters

The Library of Congress recommends a stable, clean environment with limited light and no direct sunlight for paper collections. Avoid places with environmental extremes or leak risks, such as damp basements or hot attics. Read its care advice for works on paper.

Occasionally check whether your binder and holders still suit the collection. Replace a damaged sleeve before storing the card again. Looking for protection? Explore our accessories and check the listed dimensions.
